Dorset, Devon & Cornwall
Three of ‘old England’s counties by the sea’, they form part of the West Country, an area of stunning scenery and huge variety, from the rugged cliffs of Cornwall to the rolling downlands of Dorset. A favourite location for holidays, the area has an enormous range of activities for the visitor, with thousands of years of history waiting to be explored.
Dorset
More than half the county has been named as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and its Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site. Abbeys, hill figures, seaside resorts, museums, quiet villages and ancient sites are in plentiful supply. Follow in the footsteps of Thomas Hardy and his immortal characters, or enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery around Lulworth and Purbeck.
Devon
England’s third largest county, Devon has it all – wild moorland, quaint villages, spectacular coastline and unspoiled beaches. The county of ‘Lorna Doone’ and ‘Westward Ho!’, it’s rich in historical and literary associations. Its cider and cream teas have become legendary, and every corner of the county has fresh delights to offer the visitor.
Cornwall
The land of King Arthur and Merlin, rich in folklore and legend, Cornwall forms the south-west tip of England, facing the Atlantic. Relics of its once great tin-mining industry abound, and its quaint harbours, with their traditions of fishing and smuggling, are a delight.
